My husband, Rafael (AKA Mr. Light Shine), had the privilege of working as Site Director for Camp Skillz in Madison, TN this summer. This was the stuff of dreams — giving yourself every day to making your community better and being able to support your family. Camp Skillz is a program of Global Outreach Developments International that gives meaningful day camp experiences to poor and under-served families around Nashville. Rafa’s program site was located in a trailer home community just 10 minutes from our own home.

I facilitated a 2 day candle making workshop for campers. Through this craftivity, we discussed the importance of diversity and that sharing words of gratitude with others is a way we can shine light in this world.

Camp Skillz has been operating in 2 other locations in Old Hickory and Antioch for a number of years, but this was the first summer for the Madison location. While families were initially hesitant to enroll their children, the response at the end of the summer was overwhelmingly positive. Campers had fun with sports and games but also learned skills like bicycle maintenance and, of course, had a candle workshop from yours truly. Above all, every activity emphasized building character like patience, kindness, gratitude and appreciating diversity.

Our family is thrilled to have been a part of bringing such care to the neighbors in our community, especially at a time when so many would prefer building walls to building community.
