The Light Shine Story

We are community development workers and have worked together with Global Outreach Developments since 2006 in both Nashville, TN and El Salvador. Our passion is to make this world a more just and equitable place for all, one life at a time.

Because such service along with parenting requires much flexibility, I was looking for work that would support that lifestyle. In the meantime, my grandmother, Kay Kay, had been encouraging me for years to learn her craft of candle making -- something I thought that surely I could never do. Kay Kay's Kandles are famous in our family. Several times per year, she gave me a stash of candles and *sometimes* I would give one to a special friend. They are so good, in fact, that these friends soon started asking if they could buy my grandmother's candles.

I began to wonder, "Was candle making what I had been looking for?"

My grandmother "Kay Kay" whose recipe started it all!

It took a lot to overcome my intimidation and embrace the learning curve of candle making. I felt crazy. Can I really learn this skill?

After much encouragement and lessons from Kay Kay I applied to our local farmer's market -- was 100% shocked to be accepted -- and Light Shine Candles was born.

I poured that first candle in 2014. Since then, we've poured THOUSANDS. We use 100% non-GMO soy, no phthalates and no dyes. We start with a glass jar, add a cotton wick, fill and finish with locally printed labels. You can catch us at many markets and events around Nashville or check one of our stockists.

Our oldest 2 children enthusiastically help make your candles, when they are allowed. :)

From our family to yours, shine on!
